WHEELHOUSE
The design of the wheelhouse will depend upon the intended use for the boat and the overall budget. If the vessel will largely remain in UK waters the wheelhouse can be constructed of steel up to an air draught of 2.5m. Apart from the cost advantage of this, there is the convenience of not having to take down and re-erect the structure. However, if you intend cruising in the south of France many opening windows in a steel wheelhouse will be an advantage because of the heat. Hardwood collapsible wheelhouses need to be substantial enough to withstand inclement weather yet made in sections small enough to handle without the risk of breakage. The hardwood material cost is significant and the time and cost of the later maintenance burden has also to be considered. Usually, two fit and able persons will be required to take down and re-erect a hardwood wheelhouse.
